ADO.NET Overview
ADO.NET is an evolution of the ADO data access model that directly addresses user requirements for developing scalable applications. It was designed specifically for the web with scalability, statelessness, and XML in mind.

Affordable Training & Certifications

Microsoft ADO.NET Tutorials
VTC Online University is one of the most valuable training resources on the web. For just $30 (USD) per month you will have online access to this tutorial set and in-depth training on over a hundred other of today's most sought-after applications - tutorial CDs are also available. First 3 lessons are free.

The ADO.NET Tutorial
ADO.NET is an object-oriented set of libraries that allows you to interact with data sources. Commonly, the data source is a data base, but it could also be a text file, an Excel spread sheet, or an XML file. For the purposes of this tutorial, we will look at ADO.NET as a way to interact with a data base.

Data Access With ADO.NET

With ADO, creating parameters was a one line process which, while still tedious, was much easier to maintain and read. Spending three lines per parameter may not seem like a big deal, but it gets old really fast, let me assure you (especially when you have to convert over a hundred sp's into DAL methods).

Data Access with ADO.NET - Part 1

This series of articles will first be a simple overview of what ADO.NET is, and second, will be a look at the specific objects and functionality that make up ADO.NET as a whole. My hope is that this series of articles will be beneficial to intermediate as well as advanced developers who are moving to .NET. Any prior knowledge of ADO and ASP.NET will be particularly helpful.

ADO.NET's DataSet

The DataSet is actually an in-memory view of the database. It can contain multiple DataTable and DataRelation objects. This allows developers to navigate and manipulate the collection of tables and their relationships. ADO.NET involves disconnected DataSets as it is modeled for a distributed architecture. As the DataSet itself is disconnected from the data source, it must provide a way to track changes to itself.
